Assistant (personal assistant)

What it does
The assistant is the one agent of your AgentsRoom account that is not tied to a project. The interface calls it "Assistant" (title bar, Settings tab, phone tab), its default name is "Personal assistant" (you can rename it), and a few settings labels still say "Bot", its original name. It is one click away in the desktop title bar and one tap away in the mobile app. You ask in plain words, spoken or typed: "handle the last bug of the shop project", "add a task to the mobile backlog", "find out whether this library is still maintained". It lists your projects, reads and files backlog tickets in any of them, launches or resumes an agent there, searches the web, and reports back in a few lines, always saying in which project it acted. It never writes code itself: it hands that to the project's agents. It confirms before sending, deleting or publishing anything. Every calendar day starts a fresh conversation, with the previous day's one offered for resumption. If you allow it, it keeps a private memory of its own between conversations: one dossier per subject of your life (your building's management, your investments, a training plan), the people you deal with, and a dated journal of your requests (see Memory below). Shipped to everyone in 1.176.0; since 1.178.0 its panel can live in a window of its own. The site page is agentsroom.dev/features/assistant.
The assistant runs on your desktop, in a hidden home project of its own (never inside one of your repositories, so no project instructions leak into the conversation). That home is not listed among your projects and does not count in your plan's project limit.
Where to find it
- Desktop, title bar: the right-hand group shows "Help", then the assistant's button (its avatar, its name, a status dot: grey until its console was ever opened, green at rest, orange while thinking, red when it waits for you). Clicking it opens a floating panel under the button, which is the agent's real pane (conversation view, terminal toggle, composer, dictation, Voice Mode). Hovering shows "Open Personal assistant" (or the name you gave it). The panel's header holds "What is this?", "Start a new conversation", "Detach into a window", "Bot settings" and "Close".
- Desktop, Open space: a header button and a first-row launcher, "Talk to Personal assistant".
- Desktop, Settings > Agents & AI > Assistant: all its settings. Settings > Defaults > "Personal assistant" shows its provider and model and opens that same tab.
- Mobile: the "Assistant" tab in the middle of the tab bar (a raised circle with its avatar and the same status dot), and the "Assistant" card in the phone's Settings.
- Mobile, system entry points: the deep link
agentsroom://bot, Siri "Talk to Bot in AgentsRoom", the iPhone Action button and Back Tap (through that shortcut), a long press on the app icon ("Talk to the assistant" / "Write to the assistant"), the Android home screen widget and Quick Settings tile ("Personal assistant"), and "Send to Personal assistant" at the top of the text share sheet.
How to use it
- On the desktop, click the assistant's button in the title bar. The first time, a welcome window explains what it does ("Got it"); the panel shows its console starting ("Starting the console…"). The first launch may ask the CLI's folder-trust question once, like any new folder.
- Type or dictate your request in the composer, or use Voice Mode like with any agent.
- The answer arrives in the conversation view and as a notification titled with its name. When a task took more than a minute, the desktop also says your first name and what was done out loud (see Settings).
From the phone: tap the "Assistant" tab, or use any system entry point. The app opens the assistant's real agent screen (conversation and composer); the Siri, widget, tile, Action button and "Talk to the assistant" routes open it with the composer's dictation already recording, "Write to the assistant" opens it with the keyboard. If the desktop is off, the assistant is disabled, or no console can be opened, a card says why with "Try again".
Sharing text from another app: pick "Send to Personal assistant" in the share sheet. If the desktop is unreachable, the text is kept on the phone ("Kept for Personal assistant, sent when your desktop is back") and goes as soon as it is back.
Starting over today: Settings > Assistant > Identity > "Start a new conversation", or the same button in the panel's header. Closing the panel keeps the console alive; reopening reattaches to it.
A new day, or a restart of the app on a new day, boots the assistant on a blank conversation and shows the Restore past agent card above its composer with the previous day's conversation: Resume picks it up where it stopped, Ignore keeps the fresh one. Reopening the panel later the same day resumes silently. Only "Start a new conversation" forgets the previous conversation for good (since 2026-09-20; before, a restart on a new day dropped it with no way back). The card only exists when the assistant runs on a CLI that can reopen its own conversation (see Restore Session).
In its own window: click "Detach into a window" in the panel's header (shown once the console is mounted). The floating panel leaves the main window and the same conversation continues in a separate window, which you can move to another screen; the title bar button now brings that window forward instead of opening the panel. The window keeps "Start a new conversation" and the settings button, and its "Reattach to main window" cross (or closing the window) puts the panel back under the title bar button. That window does not follow the project you switch to in the main window, and it reopens at the next launch when the app restores your session.
Settings
All in Settings > Agents & AI > Assistant on the desktop; the phone shows the same rows in its "Assistant" settings card and writes them back to the desktop (greyed out until a desktop is connected). They are stored on the desktop machine, not on the account.
botAgentEnabled(global, "Enable Bot"): master switch. Off, the title bar button and the Open space launcher disappear, the phone's tab is hidden and its messages are refused.botAgentName(global, Identity > "Name"): the name it answers to everywhere. Empty = "Personal assistant" in the interface language.botAgentAvatarImage/botAgentAvatarRole(global, Identity > "Avatar"): a custom picture, or the art of a built-in role.botAgentProvider(global, Provider and model > "Provider"): the CLI it runs on. Empty = "Same as your quick agents".botAgentModel(global, "Model"): empty = "Provider default".botAgentReasoningEffort(global, "Reasoning effort"): empty = provider default.botAgentAccountProfileId(global, the account row under the model: "Claude account", "Codex account", "Antigravity account", "Grok account" or "Cursor account" depending on the provider): which signed-in account the assistant consumes. "Default" (empty) follows the account of your other agents, the pill names what that resolves to; "Default account" forces the login the CLI made on its own. Picking another provider clears it, an account never crosses CLIs. The row only shows for a provider with accounts (see Multiple Accounts).botAgentSpawnWithoutConfirm(global, Behaviour > "Can launch agents without confirmation"): off by default, you confirm each agent launch on the desktop.botAgentAnnounceByName(global, Behaviour > "Call me by my first name when a long task ends") andbotAgentUserFirstName("First name", empty = the first word of your account name): the spoken announcement, in the Voice Mode voice, on the desktop only.botAgentReviewDelaySec("Review delay before sending") andbotAgentStopOnSilence("Stop recording on silence") are still shown, but the phone now uses the composer's dictation, which they do not drive.botAgentRefandbotAgentConversationStartedAt: internal, which agent is the assistant on this machine and when today's conversation started.- Memory (Settings > Assistant > "Memory", also the "Memory" card of the phone's Settings): "What your assistant remembers", three choices, no default: "Nothing", "Ask me first", "Automatic". Stored on the ACCOUNT (server), not on the machine, so every computer and the phone show the same answer. Not an
AppSettingskey and not settable by an agent: only the user turns the memory on. Buttons: "Open the memory", "Export as Markdown", "Export as JSON", "Erase everything".
Memory
- What it is: the assistant's private memory, separate from the account memory your coding agents read. Folders:
profile(who you are, preferences, which address goes with which subject),dossiers/<subject>(context, goals, follow-up, and ajournalof dated lines),contacts(one card per person),inbox(notes to sort). - First use: the assistant panel asks "Should your assistant remember?" with the three choices; "Decide later" asks again at the next launch. Until you answer, the assistant has no memory at all (the server refuses it).
- Ask me first: it proposes in one line what it would keep and saves only on a yes. Automatic: it saves on its own and says so in one line. After a turn that wrote to the memory, the panel shows "Kept in memory: ..." with See and Undo (puts the notes back as they were before the turn).
- Browse and edit: the brain button in the assistant panel header, or "Open the memory" in Settings: notes grouped by section and dossier, search, edit, delete, and "Versions" (the last 20 states of each note, "Restore").
- Privacy: encrypted on the AgentsRoom servers with a key specific to your account; only the assistant reads it, never your project agents. When it reads a note, that note is sent to your model provider like the rest of the conversation. Passwords, tokens and card numbers are refused ("This looks like a password, a token or a card number"); keep those in the secrets vault (Commands > Secrets). IBANs are accepted.
- Leaving: "Export as Markdown" / "Export as JSON" saves a copy; "Erase everything" deletes every note on all devices (the choice stays). Deleting the account deletes the memory.
Agent tools (MCP)
The assistant is itself an AgentsRoom-MCP client. The tools its persona relies on:
projects_list: every project of the account, the ones open on this desktop first (openHere: true); "my projects" means those.backlog_list,backlog_get,backlog_create,backlog_start_next: read and file tickets in any project (projectargument).agents_spawn,agents_resume: put an agent on a task in a project open on this desktop.memory_list,memory_get,memory_save,memory_deletewithscope: "assistant": its private memory, reserved to the assistant (any other agent is refused) and only once you turned it on.memory_listreturns the chosen mode.assistant_journal({ dossier, entry }): one dated line in a dossier's journal; the server adds the date in your time zone. Hidden from every other agent.
Providers
The assistant runs through an installed CLI like any other agent, so it inherits the MCP connectors attached to your account (mail, calendar, messaging) and the AgentsRoom tools. Any provider you can pick for a quick agent works; by default it follows your quick-agent provider. A provider without an MCP client (Aider) answers, but cannot reach your connectors or your other projects; the settings tab says so when you pick one. The account row exists for Claude Code, Codex, Antigravity, Grok and Cursor, the providers that carry account profiles; the others have no such row.
Mobile
Fully present: the "Assistant" tab, the deep link agentsroom://bot (?mode=talk or ?mode=write), Siri, Action button, Back Tap, long press on the icon, Android widget and tile, the share sheet, and the same settings rows in a card titled "Assistant" (no Beta badge any more). When the desktop has it turned off, the phone says "Enable it in Settings > Assistant there." The phone never runs the assistant: it opens the desktop's agent screen through the encrypted relay, so the desktop app must be running. The tab and the assistant's cards are hidden from project lists and the Activity feed, and the tab disappears when the desktop reports the assistant disabled. The "Reasoning effort" and "Account" rows are on the phone too, with the same "Default" pill naming the inherited account; when the desktop runs an older version the account row shows no inheritance subtitle. Icon shortcuts, widget and tile need the store build of the app. The separate window is a desktop thing: nothing changes on the phone.
Limits
- Requires being signed in to the AgentsRoom account: the transcription and the spoken announcement run on it ("Sign in to use Bot" in the settings tab).
- Settings are local to the desktop machine; a second computer has its own assistant and settings.
- The Siri phrase "Talk to Bot in AgentsRoom" is fixed, in English, whatever name you gave it.
- The share sheet sends text and links only; files go to the mobile companion, not to the assistant.
- One pane at a time: while the assistant is out in its own window, the floating panel cannot open in the main window, and the panel exists in one desktop window only.
- A text kept on the phone while the desktop was away is replayed on reconnection; a message that failed to send is not.
- The spoken announcement is silent while Voice Mode is open on the assistant, when signed out, and only one desktop window speaks.
Common questions
- Why did it not open in my project? By design: the assistant lives in its own hidden home folder and opens in a floating panel, never in a project room. Its console is not listed in any project's roster.
- It says "Your desktop is offline" on the phone. The assistant runs on the desktop app: open AgentsRoom there, then "Try again". Shared text waits on the phone; a dictated request does not start until the desktop answers.
- Can I change its name or face? Yes: Settings > Assistant > Identity. The title bar, the phone, the notifications and the icon shortcuts follow.
- Does it remember yesterday? The conversation restarts every day, but the card above the composer offers to Resume yesterday's conversation. If its memory is on (Settings > Assistant > Memory), what it kept (dossiers, contacts, journal) comes back at the next start either way.
- Can I stop it from remembering, or make it forget? Settings > Assistant > Memory > "Nothing" stops it; "Erase everything" deletes what it kept; a single note can be deleted or restored from "Open the memory". You can also just tell it "forget that".
- Can my project agents read what the assistant remembers? No. The assistant's memory is private to it; your coding agents only see the project memory and the account memory.
- Is the memory encrypted? Yes, at rest on the AgentsRoom servers, with a key per account. The notes the assistant reads still go to your model provider, like any conversation.
- I restarted the app and the assistant forgot the conversation we were in the middle of. Fixed on 2026-09-20: a restart on a new day now offers the previous conversation in the Restore past agent card. Same day, it resumes silently.
- Will it launch agents on its own? Only if "Can launch agents without confirmation" is on. Off (the default), each launch shows a confirmation card on the desktop.
- Why does it open on the terminal the first time? With no transcript yet, the pane shows the CLI starting (folder trust, login, model). Once a conversation exists, the panel opens on the conversation view.
- The panel covers the dialog I am filling in. Click "Detach into a window" in its header: the conversation moves to its own window that you can put next to the form or on another screen. Close that window (or its "Reattach to main window" cross) to get the floating panel back.
- Can the assistant run on another account than my agents? Yes: Settings > Assistant > Provider and model, the account row under the model (on the phone, the "Account" row of the Assistant card). "Default" follows your other agents; pick a profile to pin one. Changing the provider resets it.
- Why does the title bar button not open the panel any more? Because the assistant is out in its own window: the button brings that window to the front. Reattach it to get the panel back.
