A ChatGPT Work alternative
that is not tied to one AI
ChatGPT Work is the agent inside ChatGPT: it takes long tasks across your apps, mostly in OpenAI's cloud. AgentsRoom takes another route: several AI assistants on your own computer, each on the agent CLI you pick. You can even keep your ChatGPT plan.
AgentsRoom does not replace ChatGPT, and the two work side by side. This page compares them for everyday work, not for code.
What ChatGPT Work is
Checked on 2 November 2026. Plans and limits move quickly: check OpenAI's help center before you decide.
- ChatGPT Work launched in July 2026: an agent inside ChatGPT for longer, multi-step tasks that end in finished deliverables.
- On the web and on mobile, Work runs in the cloud and cannot reach the files on your computer. In the desktop app it can also use local files and desktop apps, with your permission and when your plan allows it.
- Messages and task context may still be stored in the cloud when the work runs on your computer.
- Plugins link it to services such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, email, calendars and CRMs. Scheduled Tasks run an action once, on a schedule or when an event occurs.
- Usage counts against the allowance of your ChatGPT plan, and larger tasks use more of it.

Two different approaches
With ChatGPT Work
- Nothing more to install if your ChatGPT plan includes it
- Cloud tasks keep going while your computer is off
- Plugins for Slack, Teams, Google Drive, email and calendars
- One agent, inside ChatGPT, on OpenAI's models
- A desktop app for Mac and Windows
With AgentsRoom
- A desktop app plus an agent CLI, with a guided installer
- Works in a folder on your computer by default, while that computer is on
- Connecting a mail or calendar service takes an MCP server you add yourself
- A room of assistants with roles, each on the CLI you pick: Codex on your ChatGPT plan, Claude Code, Antigravity CLI or another
- A desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, with a phone companion
Filmed in the real app: one click on the Dev mode chip, I'm not a developer, and the projects, terminals and code tools give way to one room, My assistants, with a Lead assistant, a Writer, a Researcher and a Coach & Trainer. The Writer drafts a short, polite email to a client in the conversation: it prepares the text, you are the one who sends it. An Accountant joins from the business roles, and the same chip switches back to dev mode with every project as it was.

Which one fits you
ChatGPT Work does real things AgentsRoom does not. Here is where each one wins.
Pick ChatGPT Work if
You want your apps connected in minutes
Work brings ready plugins for Slack, Teams, Google Drive, email and calendars. In AgentsRoom, connecting those services takes an MCP server you add yourself.
Tasks must run with the computer off
Work's cloud tasks keep going while you are away. AgentsRoom assistants work while the computer that hosts them is on.
You want nothing to install
If your ChatGPT plan includes Work, it is already there on the web and on your phone. AgentsRoom asks for a desktop app and an agent CLI.
Pick AgentsRoom if
You do not want to depend on one AI
Each assistant can use a different CLI: Codex on your ChatGPT plan next to Claude Code on a Claude plan, for example.
You want several specialists
A Writer, a Researcher and an Accountant, each with its own conversation you can read back, and a Lead assistant that hands the work out.
You want your work in a folder on your computer
By default the assistants read and write in a folder on your computer, and the documents stay there.
You work on Linux
AgentsRoom runs on macOS, Windows and Linux. OpenAI announces its desktop app for Mac and Windows.
Where your requests and files go
With ChatGPT Work on the web and on mobile, tasks run in the cloud. In the desktop app, Work can run on your computer, and messages and task context may still be stored in the cloud.
With AgentsRoom, each assistant works in a folder on your computer by default. Running on your computer does not mean nothing leaves it: what you ask and what the assistant reads for the task go to the AI provider of the CLI you picked, under that provider's terms, including its training settings. With Codex, that provider is OpenAI.
Two AgentsRoom exceptions to know. Adaptive Mode, on by default on new installs, sends the first 500 characters of a message to AgentsRoom servers to suggest a model: you can switch it off in Settings, in the Optimization tab. Cloud Agents, an optional beta feature chosen run by run, works on a disposable cloud machine.
FAQ
Is AgentsRoom a good alternative to ChatGPT Work?
For several assistants working on your computer, on the AI plans you choose, yes. For ready-made connections to your apps and tasks that run with the computer off, ChatGPT Work is better today.
Can I keep my ChatGPT plan?
Yes. An assistant can run on Codex, signed in with your ChatGPT plan, and its usage counts against that plan's limits. Other assistants can run on Claude Code or another agent CLI.
Do I have to leave ChatGPT?
No. They work side by side: you can keep ChatGPT and ChatGPT Work for connected apps, and use AgentsRoom for assistants that work in a folder on your computer.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. Answer I'm not a developer at the first question and AgentsRoom opens a room of assistants, with no projects and no code tools. The one technical step is installing an agent CLI, and the app offers a guided installer.
Can AgentsRoom connect to Gmail or Slack?
Not out of the box. The assistants prepare drafts and documents, and connecting a service goes through an MCP server you add yourself, a step more technical than the rest.
Does it keep working when my computer is off?
No. The assistants run on your computer, which must be on. ChatGPT Work's cloud tasks do not have that limit.
Does AgentsRoom run on Linux?
Yes, on macOS, Windows and Linux, with a companion app for iOS and Android.
