## What it does

The Companion screen of the mobile app (Activity tab, then the Companion button at the top) turns the phone into a remote for the agents running on your desktop. Three gestures feed the agent you have focused on the computer: dictate a prompt with the phone microphone, attach a photo, video or file, or share a screenshot from any other app through the system share sheet. Everything lands in the composer of the focused desktop agent, in the right project, ready to reread and edit before you send it. Nothing is fired automatically, and nothing lands in the raw terminal. The same screen also works as an ambient monitor: a mascot mirrors the live state of your agents (Idle, Working, Needs input) and a history lists the agents that finished or asked something while you were away.

## Where to find it

- Mobile app: **Activity** tab, then the **Companion** button at the top of the screen. It is no longer a tab of the bottom bar.
- Any other app on the phone (Photos, Files, a browser): Share, then **AgentsRoom**. The app opens on the Companion screen with the file queued under **Shared files**.
- Requires the phone to be paired with a desktop (see [Mobile-Desktop Sync](https://agentsroom.dev/docs/mobile-desktop-sync.md)).
- On the desktop, the **Mobile** button of the status bar opens the **Pair Mobile App** window: how to connect (sign in on the phone, remote access switch), then **Your phones**, then the store buttons.

### Your phones, store versions and updates

- **Your phones** (desktop, Mobile window) lists every phone that ever connected to this computer: connected ones first with a green dot and "Connected", the others sorted by **Last connected: <date>**. An offline phone can be removed with the bin icon, then **Remove** to confirm; this also drops it from the devices approved on this computer. A connected phone cannot be removed. The list stays on this computer only.
- Once a phone is known, the **Don't have the app yet?** block folds into one line. Each store button (**App Store**, **Google Play**) carries a small chip with the latest version live on that store and the day it went live. No chip when the version is unknown.
- When the relay cannot be reached, the window shows **Not connected to relay: mobile pairing unavailable. Retrying…** with the technical error and the relay address under it (useful to tell a VPN or proxy block from an outage).
- On the phone, at launch, when a newer version is live on its own store, a sheet **A new version is available** shows the installed and latest versions, three reasons to update, and the notes of the missed versions under **What's new**. Buttons: **Update now** (opens the store), **Later** (asks again after 3 days), **Don't show again** (final on this phone). A push notification may also remind a phone that stays on an old version.

## How to use it

1. On the desktop, open the project and the agent you want to talk to: the phone always targets the currently focused agent.
2. Dictate: open the Companion screen (Activity, then **Companion**) and tap the microphone once (**Tap to dictate**), speak, tap again (**Tap to stop**). The transcript appears in the desktop composer.
3. Attach: tap the paperclip next to the microphone (**Add to composer**), pick **Photo**, **Video** or **File**. Images are resized and recompressed before sending, so it works on cellular. The file is sent in slices through the relay and lands as an attachment of the composer, whatever its type; the same applies to the **Attach** sheet of an agent's terminal on the phone (**From files**, **From photos**): the file becomes an attachment referenced by its path in the message, never pasted as text into the prompt.
4. Share: from any app, share to AgentsRoom. If an agent is focused and the desktop is connected, the file leaves on its own and shows **Sent to composer**. Otherwise it waits in the queue (**Waiting**), you can delete it, and it goes when an agent becomes reachable.

Keeping the Companion screen open keeps the phone awake, so it can sit next to the keyboard as a status display.

## Settings

None on the desktop. On the phone, the microphone and photo permissions are asked by the system on first use.

On a tablet or an unfolded foldable only, mobile Settings shows a **Layout** section with two choices: **Side by side** (default) and **Full screen**. Its help text: "Side by side shows the project list next to the open project, and the pairing screen next to the sign-in form. Full screen gives every screen the whole width, like on a phone." The choice is local to the device. It is hidden on a phone, where it would change nothing.

Mobile Settings > **Account** shows the signed-in user, **Sign out** and **Delete account** (both only when you signed in on the phone itself, not when the phone merely mirrors the desktop's session). **Delete account** asks **Confirm account deletion?** with **Schedule deletion** / **Keep account**: the deletion is scheduled 30 days later, the phone signs you out at once (which also drops the desktop pairing), and signing in again before that date cancels it. Quota messages on the phone speak of "your account" rather than naming a tier. On iPhone and iPad, an app version carrying in-app purchase adds an **AgentsRoom Pro** line to that same Account card, where Pro can be subscribed to and purchases restored: see [Apple In-App Purchase](https://agentsroom.dev/docs/apple-in-app-purchase.md). Other mobile settings (search, categories, **Restart desktop**) are covered in [Remote Agent Control](https://agentsroom.dev/docs/remote-agent-control.md) and [Auto-update](https://agentsroom.dev/docs/auto-update.md).

## Agent tools (MCP)

None. The content arrives in the composer exactly like a pasted screenshot or typed text.

## Providers

All providers, no difference. Dictation and files land in whichever agent is focused, whatever CLI it runs.

## Mobile

This is a mobile feature; the desktop side is the composer receiving the text or attachment. Works on iPhone, iPad and Android, paired with a macOS, Windows or Linux desktop.

Signing in on the phone: email and password, or, under **OR**, **Continue with Apple** (iPhone and iPad only, shown first; since 2026-09-20 the button is drawn by the app on the same geometry as the Google one, with Apple's logo and wording, and the authorization sheet stays Apple's own) and **Continue with Google**. One flow serves both the sign-in and the create-account screens: an existing account is signed in, a new one is created. An Apple sign-in may hand the app a private relay email rather than your real address. The same three doors exist on the site and the desktop: see [Account Sign-In](https://agentsroom.dev/docs/account-sign-in.md).

An agent's console on the phone is laid out like the desktop pane: the header carries the task title with the project logo, the role pill, the model pill and the token count; the floating buttons sit at the right (**Scroll to top** / **Scroll to bottom**, **Fullscreen**); the input box takes the whole width with its tools under it. Details in [Terminal Keys and the Agent Console](https://agentsroom.dev/docs/mobile-terminal-keys.md).

Large screens: the app is the same on a phone, an iPad or a foldable. On an unfolded foldable it now fills the whole screen instead of a phone-sized column with black bands around it, and an iPad is free to rotate (phones stay in portrait). When the window is wide enough, the **Projects** tab shows the project list on the left (40 % of the width, never narrower than a phone column nor wider than a fixed cap, since the project needs more room than the list) and the selected project on the right, with no back navigation; when that list pane is narrow, its header drops the AgentsRoom wordmark and keeps the logo so the name of the connected computer stays readable; opening a project from a notification or from the Activity tab lands in that right pane. The pairing screen shows the pairing column on the left and the sign-in, sign-up or password-reset form on the right (the install instructions once you are signed in). An agent's terminal still opens full screen on top. Folding the device back goes back to the one-column phone layout. The bottom tab bar stays at the bottom on tablets, and on every OS it folds away under a project's full-screen screens (an agent console, the preview, media, files, changes, triggers, database) so the console owns the bottom of the window.

## Limits

- The desktop app must be open with an agent focused. With no focused agent the phone shows **Open an agent on desktop first** and shared files stay queued.
- Dictation has a usage limit on the transcription service (**Dictation limit reached**).
- A file attached from the phone must stay under 20 MB (**File is too large to send (keep it under 20 MB).**). A large file needs an up-to-date desktop: an older one answers **Update the AgentsRoom desktop app to send a file this large.**
- The phone and the desktop do not need the same Wi-Fi: everything goes through the end-to-end encrypted relay, which only carries ciphertext.
- Shared files are saved as attachments inside the project's own AgentsRoom folder, which is ignored by git automatically.

## Common questions

- **Where does my dictated prompt go?** Into the composer of the focused desktop agent, not into the terminal. You reread and send it yourself.
- **Can I send a screenshot of a mobile bug to an agent?** Yes: take the screenshot, Share, AgentsRoom. It arrives as an image attachment in the focused agent's composer.
- **Does it work offline?** The file waits in the Shared files queue and is sent as soon as a desktop agent is reachable. A failed item is retried once when the connection comes back.
- **Does it work with Codex, Copilot, or only Claude?** Any provider: the companion talks to the composer, not to the CLI.
- **I attached a JSON or a PDF from my phone and the agent refused the message as too long.** Fixed on 2026-09-16: a file attached from the phone, in the Companion or in an agent's terminal, is now sent as an attachment and referenced by its path, so its size never reaches the prompt. Update the mobile app and the desktop app.
- **Can I sign in with my Apple ID?** Yes, on iPhone and iPad: **Continue with Apple** on the sign-in and create-account screens. Android offers email and Google. Since 2026-09-20 the site and the desktop offer Apple too, so an account created on the phone with Apple opens everywhere.
- **How do I delete my account from the phone?** Settings > **Account** > **Delete account**, then **Schedule deletion**. The account is deleted 30 days later; signing in again before then keeps it.
- **Can I subscribe to Pro from the app?** On iPhone and iPad, yes, on an app version carrying in-app purchase: Settings > **Account** > **AgentsRoom Pro**, with **Restore purchases** on the same sheet. The Android app sells nothing. Quotas are still described as the limits of your account rather than by tier name.
- **How do I know my phone app is out of date?** The phone offers **A new version is available** at launch, and on the desktop the store buttons of the Mobile window show the latest version of each store. **Don't show again** stops the sheet on that phone for good.
- **Where do I see which phones connect to my computer?** Status bar > **Mobile** > **Your phones**, with the last connection of each. Remove an old phone there once it is offline.
- **My Galaxy Fold or Pixel Fold shows the app in a narrow column with black bands.** Fixed on 2026-09-16: update the mobile app; the unfolded screen is used in full, with the project list and the project side by side.
