# Auto-update

> The desktop app checks for a new version on its own, downloads it in the background and installs it the next time you quit AgentsRoom.

- Web page: https://agentsroom.dev/docs/auto-update

## What it does

The desktop app checks for a new version on its own, downloads it in the background and installs it the next time you quit AgentsRoom. A small indicator in the footer shows the state: **Checking for updates…**, **Downloading update… 42%**, **v1.2.3 is ready**, and, when the app has failed to update several times in a row, a labelled **Update blocked** chip with the raw reason so the machine is no longer the last to know. The phone can also trigger a desktop update remotely.

## Where to find it

- Footer, right side: the **Update indicator** next to the **Version number** (click the version to read the changelog).
- Mobile app: Settings > **Check desktop update**. Right under it, **Restart desktop** quits and reopens the desktop app from the phone without installing anything (see [Remote Agent Control](https://agentsroom.dev/docs/remote-agent-control.md)).
- Settings > **Beta** joins the beta programme, which receives features still being tested.

## How to use it

1. Nothing to do: the check runs at launch and periodically while the app is open.
2. When **Update ready** appears, click it to restart and install now, or simply quit; the update installs on its own at the next quit. Closing the window is not quitting: use Quit.
3. From the phone: Settings > Check desktop update. The desktop shows a **Remote update** dialog through the phases (Checking, Downloading, ready to install, restarting); the phone is briefly disconnected while the desktop relaunches.
4. **Update available** / **Update required** window: when AgentsRoom tells you a new version is out, this window follows the in-app updater instead of sending you to the website. While the update downloads it shows a progress bar with "Downloading in the background, you can keep working." and a greyed **Downloading… 42%** button; once downloaded, the button becomes **Reboot to install v1.2.3**, with a reminder that terminals, dev servers and SSH tabs close on restart. **Download update** (a link to agentsroom.dev) only remains when the updater cannot do the job itself (an error, or an install type the release does not serve). An **Update required** window has no **Later** button: you must update to continue.
5. If **Update blocked** shows, hover it to read the reason and click to retry the check.

## Settings

- `betaFeatureOptOut` (global, Settings > Beta): beta-programme features this account switched off for itself.
- `uiElements.footer.update` / `uiElements.footer.version` (global, Settings > Interface elements): hide the indicator or the version number.

## Agent tools (MCP)

None.

## Providers

Not related to agent CLIs. Updating the CLIs themselves is a separate notice: see [CLI Update Notice](https://agentsroom.dev/docs/cli-update-notice.md).

## Mobile

The phone updates through the App Store and Google Play. Settings > **Check desktop update** on the phone drives the desktop updater and shows its result, including the raw error message when it fails.

## Limits

- The update installs only on a real quit. Users who never quit keep running the old version with an update waiting.
- macOS: an app launched from the downloaded disk image or a translocated (quarantined) location cannot replace itself; drag AgentsRoom into /Applications first.
- Windows: clicking restart installs silently (no installer wizard) and reopens the app. An installer quarantined by an antivirus makes the update loop; see [Windows and Linux](https://agentsroom.dev/docs/windows-and-linux.md).
- Linux: an AppImage updates itself; a .deb or .rpm install updates through its package and may ask for your system password when installing. If a release does not ship the package your install needs, the app says so and points you to agentsroom.dev instead of retrying forever.
- macOS: an Intel Mac needs an Intel build in the release; when it is missing, the app says so and points you to agentsroom.dev.
- The **Update blocked** chip appears after two consecutive failures (about an hour of checks) and is shown even if the update indicator is hidden.
- When data sharing is on, only a closed-vocabulary failure code is reported (network, disk full, permissions, signature...), never a path or a message.

## Common questions

- **I am several versions behind and never saw an update.** Quit the app fully (not just the window) so the pending update installs; if Update blocked shows, read its reason.
- **Can I check manually?** Click the update indicator to retry, or from the phone with Check desktop update.
- **The update window used to send me to the website, now it shows a progress bar.** Since 2026-09-25 it follows the download already running in the background and then offers **Reboot to install**. No need to download an installer by hand.
- **Where is the changelog?** Click the version number in the footer.
- **How do I get features earlier?** Join the beta programme in Settings > Beta; see [Beta Programme](https://agentsroom.dev/docs/beta-program.md).
